JK Rowling Calls Out ‘Cursed Child’ Hermione Racism

JK Rowling and Emma Watson have given their unwavering support for Noma Dumezweni’s Hermione Granger amid racist comments.

In a perfect world, the best actors are chosen for the job. In the case of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage play, Noma Dumezweni is the best actress for the role of adult witch Hermione Granger.

Unfortunately, not everyone shares Rowling’s opinion. The world renowned author even went so far as to refer to Dumezweni’s opposition as a “bunch of racists.” Rowling went on to say how she has had a “great deal of difficulty” with fans who believe Hermione “must be a white woman.”

Emma Watson originally played Hermione Granger in the Warner Brothers film series.

“But I decided not to get too agitated about it and simply state quite firmly that Hermione can be a black woman with my absolute blessing and enthusiasm” Rowling stated, adding that Dumezweni was simply “the best actress for the job.”

Dumezweni also spoke out against the haters, telling Evening Standard that the whole situation “stems from ignorance.”

“They don’t want to be a part of the creative act. To say it’s not as it was intended is so unimaginative. I don’t think they understand how theatre works. We’re here to heal you, make you smile and whisk you away.”

Dumezweni is also promoting Warwick University’s Jami Roger’s project geared towards celebrating “forgotten Shakespearean performances by ethnic minority actors.”

JK Rowling and Emma Watson have endorsed the casting decision for  the Cursed Child Hermione via their Twitter accounts.
