My crush on Joseph Gordon-Levitt has never been stronger. He has made a video talking about why he is a feminist and what exactly the word means to him.
He begins talking about his appearance on The Ellen Show
when she asked him if he would say he was a feminist and he replied with, “I absolutely would.”
Gordon-Levitt had another interview with a man who asked him what feminism means to him. He responded, “To me it just means that your gender doesn’t have to define who you are. That you can be whoever you want to be, whatever you want to be, regardless of your gender.”
Gordon-Levitt talks about how he wasn’t aware that people take feminism to mean a lot of different things. In particular, he talks about a Tumblr he found, “Women Against Feminism,” which features anti-feminist women explaining why they think they don’t need feminism.
“I found it very interesting looking through that site and seeing what people had to say. There were some people that were saying that feminism made sense in the past but it doesn’t anymore because men and women are equal now.”
He then addressed the salary issue as just “one of many examples” of how men and women aren’t equal.
He talks about how some people misunderstand feminism, thinking it means “that it’s not right for a woman to do things that are traditionally a ‘woman’s place,’ like stay home and raise kids.”
Gordon-Levitt is asking viewers to submit videos of themselves answering his questions, “What does the word feminism mean to you? Would you call yourself a feminist? Why or why not?”
“For me, as a feminist, it should be up to the woman to decide if she wants to be a mom…if that’s what she wants to do full-time, that’s awesome, that’s what my mom did. But if she wants to go out and have a career apart from being a mom, then she should be able to do that as well, and that’s to the benefit of everybody.”
So what does feminism mean to you? Leave a comment below, or better yet, make that video and submit it. Some of them may be featured on next season’s “HitRecord On TV,” on Pivot.
