Joss Whedon, also known as my new personal hero and a man with a lot of girl power, has promised that he will be featuring more female superheroes for Marvel Studios’ upcoming films.
Whedon has stated in the past that the lack of women in superhero movies “pisses him off” and he is ready to do something about it!
He doesn’t want to feature a woman superhero just for the sake of having one and told Collider that he tries to, “make sure that the women in the movies aren’t window dressing and that they have something to say and something to do.”
In that same interview, he also says that Marvel has a lot of different and great characters, including females, to pull from so why not start doing that?
As of right now, the only major female superhero that we have seen from Marvel Studios would be Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow.
Yet to be seen, though she has been confirmed for The Avengers 2, Scarlet Witch will be the next one that we see – and of course, there is always the rumor mill which is currently circulating that there is going to be a Captain Marvel/Ms Marvel film as well.
Whedon is well-known for having strong women in his productions; the most popular being the women in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
While Buffy still lives in our hearts (and in our Netflix queues) and The Avengers 2 is a bit far off from being released, I think it’s safe to assume that we’ll be getting our dose of amazing female characters from Mr. Whedon this fall when his brand new show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres on ABC.
