CNN Journalists Resign Due To Retracted Trump Story

Three CNN journalists have resigned after a story linking a member of Trump’s team to a Russian investment fund.

CNN’s investigative unit is now three journalists short after they resigned over a retracted story. The story, initially published June 22, 2017, connected “an ally of President Trump to a Russian investment fund.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, the story said that Senate investigators were “examinging a meeting” between Anthony Scaramucci of Wall Street and a Russian Direct Investment Fund executive.

Scaramucci served as a hedge fund specialist at Skybridge Capital before joining Trump’s transition team.

Scaramucci claims that the story, which was taken down on Friday along with all relevant links, is false. CNN claimed the story did not meet “its editorial standards” and formally apologized to all effected by the piece.

The piece’s author, Thomas Frank, and editors Eric Lichtblau and Lex Haris resigned shortly after the retraction. All three were seasoned verterans of the industry.

“On Friday, CNN retracted a story published by my team. As executive editor of that team, I have resigned,” Haris said in a statement. “I’ve been with CNN since 2001, and am sure about one thing: This is a news organization that prizes accuracy and fairness above all else. I am leaving, but will carry those principles wherever I go.”

CNN later claimed it wanted to protect itseld “against allegations of “fake news” from Trump” and those who support him. Despite pulling the story, the news outlet has not said it is false.

“In the aftermath of the retraction of a story published on CNN.com, CNN has accepted the resignations of the employees involved in the story’s publication,” a spokesman said Monday evening.

Trump took this retraction as an opportunity to go on the offensive, tweeting his displeasure with “Fake News CNN” and pointing an accusatory finger at other news outlets. Another tweet said CNN was looking at “big management changes now that they got caught falsely pushing their phony Russia stories. Ratings are way down.”

CNN is not expecting any executive changes in response to the retraction.

According to Buzzfeed, CNN began to “impose tighter restrictions on the online publication of stories about Russia” this past Sunday, claiming it was to prevent pieces like Scaramucci’s from happening again.

No word yet on how NBC, CBS, ABC, New York Times, and Washington Post have responded.
