Joyce Carol Oates Fools Internet Over Dinosaur Tweet

People assumed Joyce Carol Oates was fired up, but no one knew she was joking after a Twitter trend about dinosaurs went viral following Spielberg’s post.

Joyce Carol Oates thinks Steven Spielberg’s jokes should be extinct.

Or so you thought.

The trouble kicked off when IGN Movie editor, Chris Tilly, tweeted a picture of Steven Spielberg with a dead triceratops, while leaving a sarcastic comment saying:

“This guy thinks it’s cool to kill defenceless animals and then take a selfie.”

The author took to twitter on June 11th after seeing the picture to note her horror at the barbaric nature, wondering where the conservation laws were in this area of the world.

Of course, many responded to author, including the original tweeter himself, to assure her this was not a real animal, but a picture from the set of Jurassic Park.

However the joke is on them, as Joyce knew it was a dinosaur, and brought out the silencing power of the internet: a place where everyone claims that they are right 100% of the time.

In an interview with NPR the author confirmed that her tweets are meant to be funny, but many times that is not a good idea.

The responses were immediate, and dismissive, asking if Oates was “slipping” and saying “you know Dinosaurs are extinct, right?”

Even Chris Tilly got in on the action, saying he no longer knew if he was being trolled, if this was a joke, or if society was doomed.

We just don’t know, Chris. We just don’t know.

What we do know, is Joyce Carol Oates knows more than you probably ever will, so a little respect, eh Internet?
