Fans eagerly awaiting the Wachowski siblings’ latest film Jupiter Ascending, originally set to open in theaters July 18, will now have to wait until February 6, 2015 to see the sci-fi epic.
The Hollywood Reporter stated that Warner Brothers opted for a later release date because “the $150 million movie needed more special effects work.”
Deciding to change the film’s release date a mere six weeks before it is supposed to premiere is a risky choice, but one that could ultimately end up benefitting the film rather than hurting it. Without other summer blockbusters to compete against, Jupiter Ascending could potentially make a box-office killing in the usually dormant post-Christmas months.
In the film, Channing Tatum plays an alien elf-like warrior determined to protect Mila Kunis, a normal earth-dwelling janitor who discovers she’s actually an intergalactic princess.
The trailer shows various interstellar action sequences and gorgeous scenery that make the new release date seem like it will be worth the wait.
