While John Constantine’s future on television may be in doubt
, the occult detective is one step closer to heading to the big screen.
The completed screenplay for a film based on the DC Comics series Justice League Dark
, penned by acclaimed screenwriter Guillermo del Toro has been received by Warner Brothers, and has gone into weekend reads
to determine the studio’s reaction.
Justice League Dark
began with DC’s New 52 reboot, is made up of Constantine and other DC characters with more supernatural elements and is meant as a showcase for the more magical and mystical characters of the DC Universe.
The project has been in progress since del Toro confirmed
in 2013 that he was working on the film under the working title Dark Universe
. He has also revealed that he envisions notable DC Comics characters and Justice League Dark stalwarts Madame Xanadu, Swamp Thing, Deadman, and Zatanna the Magician, among others, to join Constantine as primary characters in the film.
In regards to the shared DC Universe established with Man of Steel
and set to continue with Warner Bros. announced slate of films
extending into 2020, del Toro has stated that it will likely be independent not only from that universe but also the continuity established
in the Constantine
However, he has stated he is not opposed
to incorporating elements of both, even going so far as to say he would consider the show’s lead Matt Ryan to also play John Constantine in the film.
