The number one rock star in the world is Kanye West…according to Kanye West.

The 36-year-old made quite an impression during his interview on BBC Radio 1.  A 15-minute chat with Zane Lowe was posted on YouTube, and at the end of it was where Kanye made the declaration of his popularity. “Rap is the new rock’n’roll. We the new rock stars, and I’m the biggest of all of them. I’m the number one rock star on the planet.”

Kanye also discussed how the only other person comparable to him is the late Michael Jackson. “What Michael Jackson did with videos and the ground he broke, there would be no Kanye West if it wasn’t for Michael Jackson. Of course you know Michael Jackson had to fight to get his videos played because he was black, and Michael Jackson wasn’t even black; he was Michael Jackson!

“People who have issues with me, they classify my motivational speaking as rants, well I’ve reached a point in my life where my showman boat ship has hit the painting. I was able to ascend to massive heights, and I’ve got to a point that Michael Jackson did not break down. I have reached the glass ceiling, as a creative person, as a celebrity and I’ve been at it for 10 years.”

Despite being the self-proclaimed “number one rock star”, Kanye also discussed not achieving the same level of success as friend and frequent collaborator Jay-Z. “Jay Z is more realized than me,” he said. “More of his dreams and aspirations have come true. You don’t realize I am so frustrated. Like, I’ve got so much I want to give. … And I’ve got a million people telling me why I can’t do it. I know how to make perfect, but that’s not what I’m here to do. I’m here to crack the pavement and make new grounds sonically … and culturally.”

Besides comparing himself to Michael Jackson, Kanye has recently also been comparing himself to Michael Jordan (“…me as Kanye West, as the Michael Jordan of music…”) and declared himself a god (which, in the same interview, Kanye confirmed was written as a dig at fashion designer Heidi Slimane)
