Ben Patton Staff Media Lead When it comes to the leading ladies in pop music, it is doubtful that anyone would contest that Madonna is the undisputed “Queen of Pop.” The world was in a state of musical virginity before Madge popped that cherry when she performed her hit single “Like a Virgin” at the very first MTV Video Music Awards in 1984. The hitmaker behind “Vogue,” “Frozen,” “Papa Don’t Preach,” and “Like a Prayer” has been stunning audiences across the globe for three decades. Her often controversial style has made her a polarizing staple in the music industry, and has helped to shape the face of the industry as we know it. Madonna is a successful business woman, as well as an artist and mother. She is recognized by Guinness World Records as the top selling female artist of all time, with over 300 million albums sold. Madonna has an extensive list of awards and nominations, having won 2 Golden Globes, 3 American Music Awards, 7 Grammy’s, and 38 Billboard awards. Madonna is also tied with Rihanna for the 4th spot on the Billboard Hot 100 list with 12 number one singles. The 54 year old chart has them trailing The Beatles lead with 20, followed by Mariah Carey with 18 and Michael Jackson with 13. So, with all of these years of experience, countless accolades, legendary status as an artist (Madge is listed second to only the Beatles on Billboard’s Hot 100 Artists of All Time list) and the international recognition as the Queen of Pop, it begs the question, who is the Princess of Pop? We want all of the superfans out there to be heard, so please vote in our poll below and let us know who YOUR Princess of Pop is. And the nominees for Princess of Pop are…

Katy Perry Katy was born in 1984, the same year Madonna was making headlines with her “Like a Virgin” performance at the VMAs.  Since then, she has taken the pop world by storm; tying Michael Jackson in 2011 for the most number one hits from a single album, a whopping 5. Teenage Dream tied Michael’s Bad, making Katy the first female artist ever to reach that status (and only the second artist of any demographic, ever). Katy released her first album in 2007 which included hits like “I Kissed a Girl,” “Hot and Cold” and “Waking Up In Vegas;” but it wasn’t until Katy’s third album, Teenage Dream, in 2010 that she really soared into Pop Princess territory. With 2 American Music Awards, 4 MTV Music Awards, 7 Billboard awards, 9 Grammy nominations and 12 People’s Choice Awards, not to mention a total of 6 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 list, Katy is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

Taylor Swift I know, I know…you think Taylor Swift is country. Let’s be real, Taylor Swift is whatever she wants to be. Kelly Clarkson went from rock-popper to country-ish, but Taylor has genuinely earned recognition on the pop charts. So even though she’s the country music sweetheart, she has crossover powers that put her on this list of potential pop princesses, I’ll let you decide. With over 26 million albums sold so far, Taylor would make any artist nominated in the same category as her shudder. Granted, most of her wins are in the country categories, but she’s already tied Madonna with 7 Grammy wins. She also has 11 American Music Awards, 11 Country Music Awards (including one of only two Pinnacle Awards ever received) and 17 Billboard awards. She’s scored a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 with “We Are Never Getting Back Together” and has had 4 other singles break into the top 3.Though she may be a long shot as the pop princess; she’s definitely earning her place in the pop arena.

Lady Gaga Gaga is a clear frontrunner for this title, though she has been likened to Madonna on more than one occasion, Mother Monster has a niche all her own and her Little Monsters revel in it. She’s original, edgy, controversial, unpredictable and just plain entertaining. Selling an estimated 23 million albums worldwide, Gaga has won 1 American Music Award, 5 Grammy Awards, 13 MTV Music Awards and 28 Billboard awards. She’s had global hits with “Born This Way,” “Paparazzi,” “Bad Romance,” and most recently, “Applause;” and with the release of ARTPOP, there’s room for even more.  She’s had 2 number one singles on Billboard’s Hot 100 list and 4 others break into the top 5.

Miley Cyrus You knew this was coming; I mean, you had to know…right?! The former Disney darling might not be near the successes of Gaga or Perry, but she is definitely making a name for herself in the pop music world. She’s setting the stage for what could be a triumphant career in the industry, but only time will tell just how triumphant. Her brand new album, Bangerz, has debuted to rave reviews and her singles “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball” have become global hits. With a Golden Globe nomination, 1 MTV Music Award, 18 Teen Choice Awards and 4 Billboard Awards, and 3 songs in the top 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, Miley has a fanbase that could help propel her music to the next level and into the princess zone. She can’t stop, and she won’t stop until she does!

Britney Spears Britney is the unofficial Princess of Pop…from the 90’s. After her public meltdown, she was able to get her life back on track and has been on a mission to reclaim her place on the charts. With Gaga, Miley and Katy giving her a run for her money, Britney is fighting an uphill battle. Britney has sold more than 34 million albums thus far in her career and has earned 1 American Music Award, 21 Billboard awards, 6 MTV Video Music Awards and 1 Grammy.  With hits like “Toxic,” “Baby One More Time,” “Oops I Did It Again,” “Circus,” and her recent single, “Work Bitch,” Britney still has what it takes and is letting us know she’s not going anywhere. With 5 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and 3 others in the top 3, Britney is definitely fighting for her spot on the princess platform. Alright PopWrappers, it’s up to you now. Tell us who you think should earn the title of Princess of Pop! You can even let us know who you think should have been included on this list and who should have been left off! Pass it on Little Monsters, Katy Cats, Smilers, Swifties and Britney’s Army – the more votes your princess of choice gets, the better!
