Katy Perry: From Pop Icon to Folk Music Star? Singer Talks About Next Phase

Over the past couple of years, we have seen artists change directions with their careers.

Country artists such as Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood have leaned more towards a pop rock sound while Voice coach Christina Aguilera has tried to put her hand into electronica and dance music.

However, pop princess Katy Perry could top all of these transitions when she goes from pop rock to folk music.

In an interview with Billboard, the “Roar” singer said that she wants the next stage of her career to emulate a legendary singer-songwriter.

“I’ll probably turn into more of a Joni Mitchell. As I inch towards my 30s, I think my fourth record will be more of an acoustic guitar album.” The pop star said.  “That’s where I started when I was first discovered by Glen Ballard and got my first record deal.”

Luckily for Perry, she has the backing of her on-again/off-again boyfriend, John Mayer.

“One thing John said to me was, ‘It’s harder maintaining success than finding it,’” said Perry. “ I’ve got a few records under my belt, and I still feel like a brand-new artist. People still want that truth to cut through.”

Perry’s fourth studio, Prism, is scheduled for release on October 18.
