Yesterday at UNICEF Headquarters, Katy Perry was appointed as UNICEF’s latest Goodwill Ambassador. She joins an already impressive list of celebrities that include David Beckham, Harry Belafonte, Orlando Bloom, Leo Messi and Susan Sarandon. Katy has been very active in lending her voice and time to UNICEF, especially this year. In the earlier half of the year, Katy visited one of the poorest countries in the world, Madagascar, bringing some much needed attention to the situation of the children located there. Then in October, she joined UNICEF’s celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child in lending her hit single “Roar” to the PSA to inspire girls to becoming tomorrow’s champions. Most recently, she hit up social media and asked people everywhere to support the UNICEF emergency relief efforts for children, including those that were devastated by Typhoon Naiyan that struck the Philippines this November. Upon being appointed as the latest Goodwill Ambassador, UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said, “Katy Perry is already a champion for children, and we look forward to hearing her ‘roar’ on behalf of UNICEF. We are delighted that she is joining us as UNICEF’s newest Goodwill Ambassador and lending her remarkable voice to amplify the voices of children and young people around the world.” In her new position, Katy will work on engaging young people about speaking out about the challenges that they have faced in their lives and coming up with solutions to overcome those challenges. She will especially focus on children and adolescents who are most vulnerable, including severe poverty, violence, abuse and neglect and in emergency and conflict situations. As anyone would be, Perry is very honored to be presented with this title and to join UNICEF in this position. “I believe young people have the power to change their own lives, with our help,” said Perry. “I am honored to join UNICEF as a Goodwill Ambassador, and committed to doing everything I can to help children and adolescents who come from such different backgrounds but want the same thing: a brighter future.” We here at PopWrapped are proud and excited for Katy and her new position! Congratulations and thanks for all you’ve done and continue to do!
