Katy Perry Roars Over Gaga’s Applause

Katy Perry’s single “Roar” is out-selling Lady Gaga’s single “Applause” in the American charts by two copies to one, according to NME.

Industry forecasters are suggesting that “Roar” will sell around 450,00 downloads by the end of the week, while “Applause” is set to move approximately 200,000 to 225,000 download.

They are the first singles to have sold more than 200,000 copies in their first week, since October. One Direction held the record with there single “Live While We’re Young” with 342,000 copies sold followed by Taylor Swift’s “Red” and Adele’s Oscar-winning single ‘Skyfall’.

“Roar” is the new single from Perry’s new album Prism, which is due for release in October, and “Applause” is from Lady Gaga’s newest album ARTPOP, which will be released in November. Gaga’s single has broken the Top 5 in the UK since it was release but hasn’t overtaking Ellie Goulding’s single “Burn” for the number one position.

In the middle of this chart battle, producer Dillion Francis has accused Perry of using his idea for the video for “Roar”. Francis took to twitter to say the singer’s video was a “rip-off” of the ideas he used in the promo for his song “Messages’. In both videos, the lyrics are shown on-screen via text messages, although Perry’s video also shows her playing with her cat and sitting on the toilet.

The final sales result for both will be released on Wednesday, Aug. 21^st.
