The Toronto International Film Festival housed some real-time Hollywood drama this week as multiple companies fought over the film rights to writer-director, John Carney’s latest endeavor.
The project in question is the musical film, Can A Song Save Your Life?, starring Keira Knightley and Adam Levine. Knightley’s character is a songwriting immigrant whose boyfriend (Levine) cheats on her with a music executive. Mark Ruffalo also stars, playing a former industry professional who crosses Knightley’s path in the aftermath and tries to help her career.
With a fascinating ensemble cast including Hailee Steinfeld, James Corden, Cee-Lo Green, Catherine Keener, Mos Def, and with Oscar buzz permeating its early reviews, Can A Song Save Your Life? is pretty much fated to be awesome.
TheWrap reports that the Weinstein Co ultimately won the corporate battle, closing the deal after some wild overnight negotiations. The filmmakers requested a $7 million guarantee for signing away their US rights, and those present during the talks are claiming that Weinstein has promised another $20 million to cover marketing costs.
CBS Films, Summit/Lionsgate and Fox Searchlight were all competing in bids for the movie’s film rights after it premiered on Saturday.
John Carney’s sale will be the second high profile transaction to take place over the weekend, as Focus Features also purchased Jason Bateman’s debut, Bad Words, for $7 million.
We can’t wait to see Can A Song Save Your Life?. If Carney’s earlier work, Once, is anything to go by it’s sure to be a classic.
