’90s Nickelodeon is BACK in a brand new way! PopWrapped sat down with Nickelodeon’s Kel Mitchell this past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con to get the inside scoop about Kel’s return to the network as a hip hop mogul on the new comedy, Game Shakers.
Because of recurring guest spots on other Nickelodeon shows over the past few years and reuniting with Dan Schneider, Kel explains why it almost feels as though he’s never left Nick!
“It does have that type of feeling. It’s awesome to be working with Dan. We worked together on All That, Good Burger, Kenan & Kel, so we definitely sometimes get that feeling of like… it feels like ’95 again. And we just have that same type of comedic timing together.”
Kel’s fanbase is growing in a very unique, family-supported way. He now has two generations of fans, many of them parents and children, who both know the star from their favorite Nickelodeon show. “Families run up to me and mom’s argue with their daughters like ‘I was an original fan!’”
Kel is also looking forward to sharing his new show with his own children. “That’s what’s cool about being on Nickelodeon. I get to do stuff my kids can watch.”
Discussing the phenomenon of ’90s Nickelodeon, Kel assures us that Game Shakers will help audiences relive the glory days. “It has the same feel. My character is a hip hop mogul. He’s a mixture between 50 Cent and Diddy, and he dances like Chris Brown. But then he has crazy moments like Coach Kreeton and those characters I used to play. It’s just a lot of fun and the story lines are crazy because being a hip hop mogul…the story lines are very broad and I really enjoy that. It’s like a dream come true.”
And did Kel Mitchell have to teach the kids on Game Shakers all about ’90s Nick?! Nope! Kel says that the boy who plays his son, Benjamin, “He knows every line of Kenan & Kel. It’s pretty freaky!”
You can catch Kel Mitchell’s new live-action sitcom, Game Shakers next season on Nickelodeon!
