On last Thursday's (February 25) airing of American Idol, we not only got to see the top ten performers work their magic, but we also got to see a special performance of the song "Piece by Piece" by Kelly Clarkson. And no offense to the young performers looking to become the next Kelly Clarkson, but there is really no comparison to the real Kelly Clarkson.
Emotional and obviously very close to having her second child (a boy) with husband Brandon Blackstock, Kelly warned the audience that there was a chance that she would cry during her performance--which, of course, she eventually did. The powerful song was written by Kelly after her first child, daughter River, was born and deals with a painful past involving her own father. She gave a strong and beautiful performance that touched many of the people watching.
Close-ups of Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez showed that they were also emotionally invested in the personal performance. Clarkson fought her way through the song as it started to get difficult, but she ultimately pushed through and made it to the end--only to apologize for being so emotional. No Kelly! You don't say sorry for being you. It's why we love you--you are so real and approachable. Don't ever change--please!
Before Kelly gave her tear-inducing performance, she sat behind the table as guest judge and was genuinely engaged and willing to give constructive criticism to the final ten performers. It was obvious that she still follows American Idol and was aware of the previous performances of the contestants. It was great to see her sitting behind the very table she sang in front of almost fourteen years (!) ago.
Kelly was crowned the Season 1 winner of American Idol in September 2002 and is, arguably, the most successful winner to date. She has sold millions of copies of her albums, with her latest Piece by Piece having been released in February of 2015. Her latest concert tour ended in September, and she had been touring with super popular acapella group Pentatonix.
Since the performance, Kelly Clarkson has made the live vocals available for purchase on iTunes. Pick up the emotional performance HERE!
