The last year or so, as it has for much of the world, has been decidedly up and down for Kendra Erika. In February, her single “Break The Wheel” became her fifth track in a year and a half hit the top 10 of the Billboard Dance Chart, cementing her place as an artist with a genuine connection to music fans and whose talents and lyrics clearly resonated with those who heard them.

Then the Corona Virus hit, all-but grinding the world to a halt, and Kendra’s career, along with those of her artistic counterparts, found itself in unknown territory with tour dates cancelled, and clubs around the world having to shut their doors; some, as it turns out, forever. While some people might have struggled – and are still struggling – to find new ways to keep themselves busy and be creative in this pandemic, Kendra isn’t and hasn’t been one of them.

Instead, she set to work writing new material, connecting with an array of producers including Charlie Midnight, the man responsible for tracks by Billy Joel and Joni Mitchell, and Jan Fairchild who has worked with Elton John, virtually. One of the fantastic results of her continued hard work and creativity is new single “So Fly”, which PopWrapped are delighted to premiere.

Kendra says of the writing and creative process behind the song : “I wrote “So Fly” with my dear friend Gerina Di Marco, who is also from South Florida and Luigi Gonzalez, whose credits range from Madonna to Barbara Streisand, and who has landed a handful of Grammy nominations. When I got to Luigi’s studio, my team and I sat down and listened to the myriad of tracks he had in store. When I was presented the one, which ended up being the track “So Fly” was written to, it struck a very powerful chord in me. The worldliness and vibrance it had really spoke to me. Being that I want to be a shape-shifter in the music community at large, I realized that this particular track needed to be a part of the multi-dimensional movement I’m striving to create.

The lyrics that began flowing formed a song that represents the beauty of being an individual. No one is going to stop you from being “so fly” and being “like a bird in the sky”. Everyone has experienced the pain of their heart being murdered by someone.  However, and through my own personal experience, being able to forge onward in living your life is what defines true and solid character. In a field of tearful and broken breakup songs, this one stands out as it allows for people to see me as a positive force with a global love and understanding edge.” 

“So Fly” is the first track to be taken from Kendra’s new album, to be released in 2021, and asked why he and Kendra felt the song was the right choice for a first release, producer Luigie Gonzalez explains: “Kendra had a voice with no limit that needed to be unleashed, and we felt ‘So Fly’ was the perfect vehicle; this is going to be a hit!”
