One of the most prestigious theatrical societies has chosen to bestow its 2016 honor on none other than Kerry Washington, the star of Scandal and several notable films.
Hasty Pudding Theatricals, the theatrical society of Harvard University, annually chooses a male recipient and a female recipient to be given the prestigious honor of being their Man of the Year/Woman of the Year. The honorees are given an elaborate parade through Harvard and then subjected to an elaborate roast, where they are put on the spot by the members of the society.
The producer and head of the committee, Kennedy Edmonds had this to say about the decision to honor Washington as this year's Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year:
We are so excited to honor Kerry Washington as the Hasty Pudding Theatricals Woman of the Year and welcome her to Cambridge to celebrate her many achievements. Kerry is an amazing actress with many fans in the company, and the perfect choice for this honor. . . . But we also feel a bit nervous as we set out to coordinate a perfect event for legendary PR whiz Olivia Pope!
Washington has been in several films, such as Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, Mother and Child and Fantastic Four. However, she is best known for her iconic performance as Olivia Pope in ABC's hit drama series, Scandal, for which she has received a Golden Globe nomination, a Screen Actor's Guild Award nomination and two Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
The president of the Hasty Pudding Theatricals society said the following about the appointing of Washington as this year's honoree. "
If Kerry is anything like her on-screen character, she may turn the tables on us during her roast!"
Previous honorees include Mamie Eisenhower, Liza Minnelli, Bette Midler, Whoopi Goldberg and Helen Mirren (who famously twerked upon receiving her award). The honoree for 2015 was comedic icon Amy Poehler.
The Hasty Pudding Man of the Year honoree will be announced within the next few weeks.
