In what is considered by most people in the Western world to be more of a political ritual than an election, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un won the country’s highest governmental seat by a unanimous vote. Of course, it’s hard to have a split vote when you only have one candidate on the ballot for the position. But in fairness, voters can select either ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on the ballot, with almost nobody selecting the latter option. The election is held every five years in North Korea and it serves to refresh the faces of the Supreme People’s Assembly, the country’s form of legislature. “This is an expression of all the service personnel and people’s absolute support and profound trust in supreme leader Kim Jong Un as they single-mindedly remain loyal to him,” the state-run Korean Central News Agency said. This is the first time an election has been held in North Korea since the death of Kim Jong Il in 2011.
