Kobo Arc: An eReader Or Not An eReader?

The Kobo Arc is the newest “eReader” from the Toronto company, but it’s not just an eReader. The Arc is essentially a cheaper tablet than the Apple iPad or Google’s Nexus 7 tablet.

The Arc comes with a seven inch, color, high definition touch screen, and access to Google Play, the latest Android OS 4.2, and social media apps like Twitter and Facebook, but it is $20 cheaper than the Nexus 7 at around $200 total.

The Arc can be used the same way as an iPad or tablet computer, with all of the available apps. It has a web browser, the ability to play music and watch television shows, as well as function as an eReader.

But it has one fatal flaw. Because the screen is HD, it loses the anti-glare that the other eReaders have. This makes reading outdoors and at night difficult for most people and can lead to eye fatigue.

The bright side of the Arc is that the Kobo app store and bookstore work perfectly on the Arc. It also groups all of your apps on the home screen based on their purpose, such as “Games” and “Education”. It has up to 10 hours of battery life, which is helpful if you’re going to be using it during travel. The speakers are front-facing, which makes listening with others better

The bottom line is this: the Kobo Arc is marketed as an eReader when it really should be marketed as a tablet. The features that make an eReader an eReader are lost in the attempt to compete with Apple, Inc. and Google.
