Celebrity couple Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have taken to the internet in an effort to encourage people to boycott magazines that pay for paparazzi photos of children in celebrity families.
This past Monday (January 27), new father Shepard posted a message on his Twitter account asking his fans to stop buying magazines that pay for pictures of celebrity children.
He said, “Please boycott magazines that run pics of ‘celebrity children.’ They shouldn’t be punished for who their parents are,” and added, “Children shouldn’t be stalked. #boycottusweekly #boycottstar #boycottpeople #boycottintouch #boycottboycottboycott”
Judging by their views, it’s easy to understand that the couple have not yet released a photo of their daughter, Lincoln, who is almost one year’s old. However, the paparazzi – as always – intruded on their privacy and managed to take a picture of their baby and posted them. But it’s okay, they were just doing their job…
Following Shepard’s Tweet, Bell followed her husband’s example and also posted a series of messages to accompany him.
She wrote, “I won’t do interviews 4 entities that pay photogs to take pics of my baby anymore. I care more about my integrity & my values than my career.”
She then posted, “Now think about how you play the MOST NECESSARY role in the sad chain of events-the consumer. Things won’t change till the consumer does.”
What the couple seem to be asking for is that we respect the privacy that the parents want their child. As stated by Bell, the change in this issue starts with the consumers. This exact issue became so important that in September of last year, a bill was finally passed in California that “will boost penalties for actions that include taking photos and video of a child without parental consent and in a harassing manner”.
Violators of this law could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $10,000 and possibly more for subsequent convictions. Are those pictures really worth it now?
Many celebrity news blogs and sites have already pledged to no longer share celebrity baby pictures unless the photos were posted by the actual parents or if they are from a photo-shoot that the parents approved of.
