Kristin Cavallari is on the hot seat after revealing her decision to forgo vaccination for her 18-month-old son. Like fellow celebrity mom Jenny McCarthy, Cavallari believes there is a link between vaccines and the development of autism in children. Cavallari made the controversial statement while appearing on the Fox Business program The Independents on March 13th. The 27-year-old former Hills star, who is currently pregnant with another boy, has been widely criticized for the statement, but clarified in a follow-up interview with The Huffington Post that, “Vaccines are not something I wanted to publicly come out and speak on. I sort of got bombarded in this interview and thrown off-guard.” She also added, “There's really scary statistics out there, and to each their own. Autism wasn't prevalent -- like it is now -- years ago, so something is going on, whether it's the chemicals in our food or the vaccines. Something is happening, and we can't really ignore that. I choose to believe that I think it's in the vaccines but, again, to each their own and that's where I stand on it." Much of the movement against vaccinations was based on a 1998 study which has since been debunked, and statistics have shown parents’ decisions to opt out of vaccines have led to a rise in cases of preventable diseases such as measles, mumps, and whooping cough. Despite these reports, the belief persists linking autism to vaccinations, particularly due to the presence of mercury in some vaccines. What do you think PopWrapped readers?
