Kurt Sutter Drama Confirmed for FX’s Fall Schedule

Kurt Sutter trades guns for swords in his new drama The Bastard Executioner. The show has been confirmed for FX’s Fall lineup.

Fans of Sons of Anarchy who have been mourning the show’s absence will be happy to know that Kurt Sutter’s new show, The Bastard Executioner, has officially been picked up by the FX network and will appear in their Fall 2015 lineup.  Production of the pilot episode is complete and shooting will resume over the summer. The first season will feature 10 episodes.

Bastard Executioner tells the story of a warrior knight in King Edward I’s charge who is broken by the ravages of war and vows to lay down his sword. When that violence finds him again, however, he’s forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all.

Sutter has been teasing fans for months by posting photos on his social media profiles, most of them taken in Wales during location scouting and production. In March, he revealed the show’s logo.

In November 2014, Sutter announced that Paris Barclay, director and executive producer of Sons of Anarchy, would direct The Bastard Executioner. Brian Grazer will join Sutter and Barclay as an executive producer. Sutter’s wife, Katey Sagal, will join the show’s cast, along with True Blood‘s Stephen Moyer and a guest appearance by Matthew Rhys of The Americans. A newcomer from Australia, Lee Jones, appears in the lead role. Other cast members include Timothy V. Murphy, Flora Spencer-Longhurst, Sam Spruell, Darren Evans, Danny Sapani, Sarah White, Sarah Sweeney, Elen Rhys, and Ethan Griffiths.

“I love history. I love theology. I love blood,” said Sutter. “It’s been very satisfying weaving fact and fiction to create a new mythology that combines all these elements. And with this extraordinary cast — Stephen Moyer, Katey Sagal and newcomer Lee Jones — this world explodes on screen. I love working with FX and Fox21TVS. They’ve been my family for 15 years. They not only tolerate me, they embrace my extremely disturbing storytelling sensibilities.”

FX Networks CEO John Landgraf  returned the sentiment, stating  “From his important contributions to The Shield to his epic run on Sons Of Anarchy, Kurt has been one of FX’s most visionary artists, and we are proud to get him back on the air so soon after the unquestionable success of Sons.
