Joan Rivers received one of the best tributes over the weekend courtesy of multi-talented drag queen, Lady Bunny. Bunny simultaneously roasted and eulogized the legendary comedienne in an online video using the same type of insult humor that Rivers was so famously known for.
Lady Bunny's Tribute to the Passing of Show Biz Legends opens with “And now a serious word from Lady Bunny” displayed on the screen, which serves as a good indication of what is about to unfold. (Lady Bunny is a comic genius in her own right and rarely delivers anything seriously.) Bunny is slightly distraught and starts off by talking about some of the celebrities we have lost this year. She makes quick references to Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin Williams, but it is Joan who is the main subject of this video. Lady Bunny delivers zinger after zinger about Rivers, in between bouts of tears, and nothing is off-limits -- her cosmetic surgeries, Melissa, Joan’s age. Bunny even manages to work in a few jokes about Madonna, Kathy Griffin, and RuPaul’s Drag Race season six winner, Bianca Del Rio.
Joan Rivers was all about being brazen, using irreverent humor, and she took no prisoners when it came to delivering a joke. She pushed the envelope and at times, offended people. Most importantly, she never apologized for her humor. This is the kind of send-off that she would have wanted. Lady Bunny has done her proud.
If you were bothered by Howard Stern’s opening statement in his eulogy at Joan's funeral, this is probably not the video for you. However, if you understood Joan Rivers and were in on the joke with her, click play and be prepared to laugh.
And if you’re in Los Angeles this weekend, Lady Bunny will be in town to perform her show Clown’s Syndrome at Cavern Club Theater (Casita Del Campo Restaurant). There will be two shows every night from Friday, September 19 through Sunday, September 21. Advanced tickets can be purchased from Brown Paper Tickets.
