I believe that television stations are secretly masters of torture. Why else would they tease us so mercilessly with clips from our favorite shows? Take, for example, the latest Downton Abbey clip released by ITV
, showing a distraught Lady Mary mourning the loss of her one true love, Matthew.
Now, she may seem a little short and snippy, but I imagine most of us would feel that way if the love of our life died in a grisly car crash on the day of our son’s birth. But hey, that’s just me.
The video shows Mary all dressed in black (traditional garb for those in mourning) with steadfast Anna by her side, as always. Nanny walks in with George, who is ridiculously adorable, and whom Mary can barely look at. I imagine she sees only Matthew in those big, round eyes and deliciously kissable cheeks. When Mary calls George a “poor little orphan,” Anna is obviously peeved, saying “He’s not an orphan. He’s got his mother. Orphans haven’t.” Well, Anna, when you’re right, you’re right.
Apparently, Mary’s new courters will come calling sooner than we expected. A discovery not everyone is thrilled with. But creator Julian Fellowes stands by this decision:
"The only reason she wouldn't be eventually courted successfully would be if she was determined to remain alone and I just don't think that's who she is. I think she's one of those people who find it quite difficult to be generally genial and those people need a partner, because otherwise there's no-one they're ever completely relaxed with."
I think I’m with Mr. Fellowes on this one. I can’t picture Mary being single for long.
will premier its fourth season on ITV on September 22 and 9 p.m. For those of us stuck in the States, the British drama won’t grace our screens until January. Were I not such a civilized, mature woman I may start stomping my feet now. Patience has never been my strong suit.
