Things are getting fishy on the set of Once Upon a Time. It’s not because the fantasy series is ripe with the stench of foul play (which it is) or because the noble heroes are floundering to save Henry (which they are). It’s because none other than the red-headed mermaid, Ariel, is swimming into the Storybrooke universe.
The dazzling character was first revealed at Comic Con in a 1:24 long promo, which can be watched below. From the first impressions, the beloved mermaid is both slightly creepy and a little big cocky. Spoiler: she’s not afraid to steal from a dwarf.
Now, with only a few days from the epic season three premiere, we get our first glimpse of the swimmingly beautiful JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who will be playing Ariel. As a bonus, we are treated to a preview of Prince Eric. It’s too bad they’re introducing him into the story. I was hoping for a Grumpy/Ariel pairing (especially after the Comic Con promo).
Photo courtesy of TV GuideNot much is known about the mermaid’s involvement with the show. It appears she’s slated to star in a few episodes; although that could change. Rumor has it that Regina will fill the role of Ursula, which seems like the perfect Once Upon A Time twist. There are strong speculations that she’ll be first seen on Neverland – a logical choice seeing as it’s an island with magical beings galore. Plus for those of you who remember Peter Pan, there are mermaids in Neverland.
Who exactly Ariel will be is hard to say. Will she be a strong-willed woman, like Emma and Ruby? Will she be more demure, like Belle and Aurora? Or, will Kitsis and Horowitz create a new breed of character – one who is neither tough nor modest, but in-between?
Perhaps she’ll be a beach-bathing surfer-girl who is a free spirit.
How it all pans out for this land-loving beauty will surely be a treat to watch! New characters mean even more twists and turns. This is usually a very good thing. Comment below and share your speculations before the premiere.
