Laverne Cox beautifully graced the cover of Time magazine and in a touching interview she relayed back to her audience the struggle of appearing feminine, being bullied, what it was like to actually come out as being transgender and the acting world.
Laverne plays Sophia Burset in the hit Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. As Sophia is also a transgender who struggles with transformation, Laverne’s role doesn't venture too far from home.
In her candid interview with Time, Laverne is as poised as ever as she recalls moments of her life where she was relentlessly bullied and even attacked by a swarm of her classmates who beat her with drum sticks. The bullying didn't stop there; a teacher called her mother and told her that her “Son was going to end up in New Orleans wearing a dress,” words that etched into the young third grader. The constant bullying and the struggle to fight her feminist appearance led to a suicide attempt where she swallowed a bottle of pills.
But even through her dark times, Laverne found ways to overcome her experiences through dance and channeling her creative side.
Not only has Laverne become an advocate for the transgender community, she has also become a leader to those that are experiencing the same grueling experiences she had to endure. Laverne has gained well-deserved recognition with this Time story, as she is the first transgender individual to grace the cover!
We wish Laverne all the success and can’t wait for Sophia’s return on Orange Is the New Black!
