Lawsuit Causes Delays in Mad Max Franchise

It’s safe to say that Mad Max: Fury Road left fans wanting more—unfortunately, a road block has been created in the form of a lawsuit.

It’s safe to say that Mad Max: Fury Road was one of the stand out movies of 2015, with unique characters and setting that left fans wanting more—unfortunately, a road block has been created in the form of a lawsuit. Director George Miller is suing Warner Bros., saying that they owe him $7 million for creating Mad Max below the $157 million budget.

Miller and his company say that the movie cost $154.6 million to make, while Warner Bros. is saying it was actually $185.1 million. Warner Bros. has also fired back, saying that they initially agreed on a PG-13 movie, not a 120 minute long, R-rated movie. The major discrepancy has seemingly arisen from the reshoots that took place in late 2013. This was ordered by the studio and caused what is being called “significant delays” to the movie. Miller says that Warner Bros. agreed that the cost of reshoots would not be factored into net cost, but the studio says the reshoots are what brought them over budget.

It’s not even just about numbers—Miller and Warner Bros. can’t even agree where the legal battle should take place. The Supreme Court of NSW decided last year that the case should be heard in Australia, though Warner Bros. is attempting to appeal decision in favor of a California trial.

In addition to the allegations, Miller has described his relationship with the studio as “destroyed,” and while scripts for two upcoming Mad Max films are ready to be filmed, as long as the two sides are facing off with each other, the franchise will be at a standstill.
