Hailing from New Jersey and having been performing from a young age, country singer Leanne Weiss has always had dreams of one day taking to a stage and performing for her own fans. Now, with her new EP Momentum out now and having been praised by numerous music outlets, said dream is a reality. Happy to chat about being influenced by Carrie Underwood and her plans for 2016, Leanne agreed to this interview with our staff writer Rebecca.

PW: How would you describe yourself and your music?

Leanne Weiss: My music is a mix of country with a little bit of pop and rock, with some catchy, feel-good songs and inspiring ballads. I’m serious about the recording process and sing with all of my heart and soul!

PW:

What would you say makes you stand out from other artists?

LW:

I am a female country artist from New Jersey, which is pretty unique. Listeners who don’t like country music say they love what I am doing. I think I’ve been able to create a unique sound that appeals to fans of all ages and musical preferences.

PW: Which bands or artists did you grow up listening to that made you think 'Yeah, I want to do that'?

LW: Growing up, I was definitely inspired by power vocalists like Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Faith Hill, but I also listened to a lot of great musical theatre vocalists like Sarah Brightman and Linda Eder.

PW:

Have those influences changed much over the years?

LW: They’ve changed somewhat, but I am just a fan of great vocalists, period, both male and female, across all genres!

PW:

If you were to compare yourself to one other artist, who would it be and why?

LW: I’d have to say that in the country genre, it would be Carrie Underwood. I’m a little bit country, pop, and rock!

PW: Would you agree that, thanks to the likes of Taylor Swift, country-pop is undergoing a resurgence?

LW: I

would! It’s cool to be able to cross over and appeal to music lovers. A lot of country listeners are rock music lovers too, and we’re hearing that influence, as well.

PW:

Who or what most influences your song-writing?

LW:

It’s definitely a combination of positive and negative experiences I have had, along with stories I’ve heard along the way. My biggest disappointments have inspired some of my favorite songs!

PW: I

f you could have written any song by any other band or artist, living or dead, which would it be and why?

LW: Great question, and it’s hard to pick one! Lately, I love “Merry Go Round,” which was so cleverly written by Kacey Musgraves, Josh Osborne, and Shane McAnally.

PW:

Tell me about your EP Momentum. Is there a story behind the title?

LW:

Yes! This past year was amazing, and I thought it would be cool to write a song about the momentum I felt with everything happening. In their own way, the five songs involve moving forward, wanting to move forward, and not looking back.

PW: Could you pick a favourite track from it?

LW: While I love each song, I think something really special happened with “Throwback.” When my producer/co-writer Chris Badami and I sat down to write it, we had it in our heads for days! My band felt the same way about the song during the recording process.

PW:

Are there plans for a full length album in the near future?

LW:

No immediate plans, but I would love to record a full-length album. Maybe next year!

PW:

You've been championed by the likes of The Boot, Elmore Magazine, and Got Country, but do the views and opinions of critics and the like mean that much to you, or are you far more concerned about what your fans think?

LW:

I am humbled by the positive reviews and feedback from fans and media outlets! My goal is to inspire as many people as possible with my music. Music, like any art-form, is subjective, so there are always some who will love your work and others who won’t. It’s important to create music that comes from my heart and conveys my true sound. That’s what I focus on. But I am always encouraged by fans and cri

tics, love connecting with them, and value their input.

PW:

Would you agree that social media has helped get your name and your music out to a wider audience? How important do you think it is for bands and artists to be socially interactive?

LW:

Without social media, I wouldn’t be connecting with people all over the world! It’s definitely a way to measure your growth as an artist and get your message out to a huge audience. Something as simple as a hashtag can reach a new fan. There are so many avenues and ways to reach people. It’s awesome!

PW:

What are your future tour and performance plans?

LW:

I already have performances lined up for 2016 and continue to book more in conjunction with releasing Momentum.

PW:

Which venue, anywhere in the world, would you most like to play and why?

LW:

It would be a dream come true to perform at the Grand Ole Opry, where so many great artists have graced the stage. That would mean I’ve “made it!”

PW:

If you could share a stage with three other bands or artists who could be living or dead, who would you choose and why?

LW:

Again, I have so many musical influences, and I could name ten! I’d be pinching myself if I shared the stage with Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, or Carrie Underwood. They inspired me in the past and continue to today.

PW:

Finally then, where would you like to see yourself three years from now? What would you most like to have achieved?

LW:

I see myself touring and performing around the country, winning at least one Grammy, starting a charity, and using my gifts to help people all over the world.
