There is so much more to talk about when it comes to Leighton Meester than her role as the haughty Blair Waldorf in Gossip Girl. We already knew that she could act, that she married Adam Brody two months ago, but did you know that she could sing and play the guitar rather decently and that she could have made an interesting pop/country singer? Indeed, between 2007 and 2011, she recorded a few songs and her album was supposed to drop at the end of 2009. After being pushed back a few times, the album finally never came out in spite of the two singles that were released ("Somebody to Love" feat. Robin Thicke and "Your Love’s a Drug"). In 2010, she sang in the movie Country Song and she was part of the soundtrack with covers of songs such as "Words I Couldn’t Say" by Rascal Flatts or "A Little Bit Stronger" by Sara Evans.  Then she worked with a band called Check in the Dark and toured with them in five cities with Diana Williams in April 2012. In a previous interview she said, “It’s such a different experience, working with the band and performing. There’s no safety net; we have all live instruments, and [it’s] really my words, my lyrics, my melodies—everything is very personal to me. (…) I’m so close to the guys in the band [they] just give me a lot of energy and inspiration, and they’re so talented and funny. A girl named Dana Williams, who’s a beautiful, awesome musician I’ve actually known since we were about 10, is opening for me, too.”   When asked about her future projects in music, she replied that she had “recorded all the songs that will go into the album [and that] everything [sounded] great. She then added that they needed “to find a producer to attach to the project and possibly just release it independently. We’ve talked to a bunch of labels and [she thought] it could be good, but at this point [she didn’t] think it [was] necessary.” Ever wondered what a duet between Leighton and Dana Williams sounded like? It is now possible thanks to the cover of Fleetwood Mac “Dreams” they made together. [embed][/embed] To me, it seems evident that Leighton’s style is not one of Your Love’s a Drug, even if it could have been a great pop hit. Heavy up-beat productions are definitely not for her. Folk music suits her voice and her sensitivity better. “I feel like folk music is a lot closer to what’s in my heart and a lot more true to my experiences of growing up, of love and the opposite” she declared in May 2012. Well Leighton, you didn’t even have to say it. I knew it from the very first listening, and this new cover does confirm it. Can’t wait for the next one !
