In this weeks’ episode of Limitless, Morra continues to make trouble for Finch and the appearance of an ex-girlfriend has him reflecting on the past and contemplating the future…
Having helped out the FBI on a case last week, Finch now has more freedom within their ranks, though that’s not to say the likes of Agent Harris aren’t still keeping an eye on him.
Nevertheless, he uses his NZT-led morning to carry on researching before meeting his ex, Shauna, on the subway. Just a note dear readers, if you ever meet the so-called ‘one that got away’, don’t try and re-connect with them when under the influence of a drug, as Brian does.
Fortunately, for the time being, his dalliance with Shauna is brief as he’s called in to help on a case involving a retired special agent who was shot in the head by a sniper. Having left the FBI, it’s soon noted that said agent, Ray Dixon, vetted potential CEO candidates. A virus wiped his computer the night before he died, so it’s soon assumed that he’d discovered something not so nice about one of said candidates.
Working his way through the masses of documents and notes Dixon kept and later shredded, Finch uncovers a potential suspect. The individual in question has been moving money, and there’s a strong suspicion of blackmail being involved. A little more digging later uncovers that said blackmail is nothing of the sort and instead secret child support payments and he is removed from the list of suspects.
Finally doing some digging of her own, Harris tracks down Dixon’s storage unit, and upon entering it, learns of his obsession with catching Marcos Ramos, the head of a dangerous and deadly drug cartel. She also uncovers information relating to a number of assassinations Ramos ordered which were carried out by La Cebra, a sniper (surprise, surprise!)
Away from the investigation and over a couple of beers (I’m more of a vodka girl myself), Finch and Harris get talking about feelings and relationships, notably due to the fact Finch is considering re-kindling his romance with Shauna though the whole NZT issue weighs heavily on his mind. The advice he receives from Harris is thoughtful and kind – that people should like him for who he is, not what he can do – or how. Well said girl!
Back on the crime side of things, Finch is handed the NYPD’s files on the Ramos cartel. It doesn’t take him long (and why would it?), having figured out the sniper is at least 6-foot-5, to draw attention to a 6-foot-6 former Olympic athlete. A dramatic chase scene follows soon after together with what has to be my favourite line of the series so far: “You ran like a rabbit, and now you’re going to die like a snake.” Serious kudos to the writers for that one.
A spanner is thrown in the works when La Cebra confesses to previous assassinations, but, as he points out, having lost a hand some time ago, he couldn’t have killed Dixon. Retired, Ramos is still using his name and has seemingly gone back on his earlier plan to get out of the cartel game and instead co-operate (yeah, right!) with the authorities and U.S. government.
Still under the influence of his NZT pill from earlier, Finch meets Shauna to help her with her apartment problems. Her landlord is wanting to raze the building, meaning she’d have nowhere to live, but upon Finch discovering said apartment building is home to a historic mural – a city landmark of sorts – things work themselves out, both in terms of accommodation and the two of them picking up on the better side of where they left off.
Ramos is tracked down but is, quite simply, frozen. It soon becomes clear that, as a result of complicated pay-off issues, the NYPD killed Ramos some time ago, when he first made reference to wanting to come clean to the FBI. The task force meanwhile, who had been supposedly in charge of the investigation to find him, are on a charter plane on their way to Caracas – but not for long!
It’s at this point, with the episode drawing to a close, that Morra makes another play, continuing to make life difficult for Finch. Sending Mr. Sands to check up on him, he warns Finch that if he wants his friends and loved ones to live, he must do as Morra demands. He delivers the line: “You belong to Mr. Morra now, which means you belong to me” with particular menace.
For me this episode had high and low moments – I for one, don’t care (yet) that much for Shauna, but the cases Finch finds himself involved in are exciting and make for great viewing. As for whether or not Morra will follow through with his threats – my guess is yes – we all have to wait and see.
