24-year-old singer/dancer/rapper Lalisa Manoban (Lisa) is already a known dominant force in the industry through her contributions to the triumphant K-Pop group BlackPink – and five years later, she’s making her dominant solo debut that’s already setting records.
After solo releases from Jennie and Rosé that respectfully maintained each member’s individuality, Lisa’s first original project is engulfed in her biggest strength, her drive to expand on that undeniable love for Rap/Hip-Hop music. Dropping the self-titled single and music video for “LALISA” the performer wastes no time on this perfectly executed track, with a deep, rich bass paired with an uncanny dance beat that fits accordingly with her solo-flow and overt musicality.
Lisa brings her top-tier confidence to her track with aspirations to leave an impression on the industry, proclaiming her debut style and pride by enthralling listeners with the message, “Lalisa, love, Lalisa love me”. In fact, that love has already proven to be a tangible truth as the singer has surpassed over 800,000 pre-orders for her release (a new record for a female K-Pop soloist) and is quickly approaching 70 million views for the music video in under 24 hours.
Lisa’s YouTube achievement makes her the largest solo debut on the platform, and also the only non-group to hit such heights – surpassing a record previously held by Taylor Swift. Lisa’s addictive sound is clearly something that has translated through her solo project, and seeing each member of BLACKPINK attain individual/joint successes feels like listeners are acknowledging the fact that each member has something irreplaceable to bring to the table.
In what might be a massive sleeper hit is Lisa’s second track “MONEY” that feels like the singer really thrives in her own space – getting to create a track that plays up the need to flex her status (because she’s Lisa, so honestly it’s what she deserves.) The beats and production of the songs feel like they also are crafted around Lisa’s desire to create dance music and choreography which she consistently displays through her LILI FILM series of iconic dance covers.
Overall, Lisa’s solo debut has found a way to appease her own style, create something lighthearted, and really just enjoy the opportunity to create something that feels authentic to the sound we’d expect from her. If she happens to set a few records along the way, that’s just an added bonus.
