Some might describe The Edge of Tomorrow as Groundhog Day with a sci-fi twist. We have to say, this is pretty accurate! This new science fiction film tells the story of a soldier, who, in the middle of fighting aliens in the not too distant future, gains the ability to relive the day every time he is killed. This creates a rather interesting (and really funny) movie.
The soldier, Major William Cage, is played by Tom Cruise. He starts out as a very unlikable character, not only because he is a coward, but because he is a sniveling bureaucrat within the military. Cruise plays this side of him very well. It is easy to hate Cage in the beginning, but as you journey with him through the movie, and watch as he evolves, he grows on you. The problem is: what you get next is just, well, generic action hero Tom Cruise. It is something we have seen before and will probably see again, pretty ironic, with the movie’s subject being about a time loop.
For the latter half, even if he is the main focus of the film, Cruise is clearly upstaged by his co-star Emily Blunt. She plays Rita Vrataski, a Special Forces soldier. Blunt is very menacing on screen. She exudes a strong self-confidence and dominates almost every one of her scenes. She also transitions well when showing the softer side of her character. It is a delight to watch the hidden pain behind her eyes while she maintains Rita’s strong persona in the movie.
The plot is pretty clever, and the constant repetitions are not tiresome at all. It offers a few surprises, and maintains a great sense of humour. For a movie of this scale, it is not really surprising that the special effects would be good. What is really amazing though, are the battle suits used by the soldiers in the movie. It is pretty well designed and crafted, and actually adds to the story by itself. The costume was able to add humour to Tom Cruise running around scared in the middle of the battle field during the early parts of the movie. A scene that wouldn’t be as funny if it was just him in a soldier’s uniform.
While the ending, like the rest of the movie, is good, it is also underwhelming. Even so, it doesn’t ruin the entire film. It is a great, funny, and action packed science fiction film that would delight nerds and non-nerds alike. It is truly worth the ticket and more!
