Like millions of others, Logan Fairbanks and his father Josh have their own YouTube channel. The videos feature the pair pulling harmless pranks on each other, with humorous or unexpected results. They’re short, fun videos meant to get a laugh and entertain.

Still, since the first post last spring there have been a string of hateful and offensive comments posted. Most of these comments focus on 11-year-old Logan, and mock him for his weight.

Logan bravely fought back against his cyberbullies and posted a two-minute video earlier this week. In the video, he reads some of the comments about him and directly addresses his bullies. It’s a heartbreaking message and, as difficult as it was to film, getting the okay from Josh may have been harder.

“I was very hesitant…I knew he had seen some comments, but I also knew that he hadn’t seen anywhere near the worst of them,” his father said.

In the end, Logan was able to convince Josh that he was mature enough to handle a video response.

Josh’s reluctance was well-placed. The comments Logan reads in the video come straight from their YouTube page and range in tome from calling him “fat” to telling him to “squeal, piggy, squeal.” Others say that the videos are only “funny because he’s fat.” One of the worst was a comment that said “I hope he dies.”

Logan spends the video scrolling though the comments and reading selected ones aloud. His ultimate goal is simple, “that people don’t bully other people online anymore.” The video ends with a message to others who are in a similar position: Don’t let their words affect you.

The video has been viewed over 520,000 times since being uploaded earlier this week. Hateful comments can still be found, but Logan is focusing on the positive reactions instead, saying “it means a lot to me to see that my video is affecting people for good from around the world.”
