Much like for the rest of us, 2020 has been a roller-coaster ride of ups and downs for the Los Angeles based duo TĀBÖŌ. The couple of Maite and Richard have experienced a year of hardship in the city of angels, having their dreams taken away from them in an instant. They were set to star in a prominent televised singing competition, but COVID brought that to a halt, along with a diagnosis of a rare autoimmune disease that Richard received. Even so, they’ve continued to make music and make the most of the year with the release of “Sad Boi”, the video for which PopWrapped are delighted to premiere.
The song is a charmingly beautiful ode to a jaded music industry experience. TĀBÖŌ choose to take the light-hearted route and search for some positivity in all the uphill battles they’ve experienced this year, instead commentating on the ‘Sad Boi’ state of mind from both sides.
Asked about the story behind the video, TĀBÖŌ explain: “Richard represents the frantic search for self during quarantine. Never still, never comfortable, always pushing onward yearning for more. Maite represents the crippling depression counterpart. Laying limp in the shopping cart, like those unmotivated to so much as get out of bed to face the day. In the end the two find a destination in the archaic journey, and make haste into the moonlit night. The video is the duplicity of living out of a shopping cart, not sure of direction, but only having an open road ahead of you. Leave your losses behind you, and realize the present is exactly that, a gift.”
“Sad Boi” is very much a reflective song, but also a nod to the future, that there’s hope for next year for all of us, and a lot more to look forward to from TĀBÖŌ.
