Louis Vivet On Where They Started, Their Creative Process, And New Music

Louis Vivet sat down for an exclusive chat, talking about their creative process, DJing, and what’s next for them as far as original music releases!

Personally speaking, I’m always looking for great new music, whether that be in the form of an artist or a DJ. SoundCloud has became one of my favorite tools to discover new music. It’s slowly taking over and becoming the new YouTube for me.

I recently discovered this electronic remix of the classic 90s’ hit, “Save Tonight,” and instantly had to find out more about the artist, Louis Vivet.

So, I tracked them down and interviewed them for all of our readers here at PopWrapped. Check out the music and interview below!

PW:

How did you get started as Producer/DJs? Is this something that you’ve always wanted to do or did you just fall into it?

We both were chasing completely different career paths when we first met in college at USC: I (Nick) was studying fine arts, and I (Aria) was pursuing a career in Structural Engineering. At that point, music was more of a passion than a potential career path. Obviously, we weren’t very good when we first started. I (Nick) had been producing for a little while before Aria and I started working together. But the thought of convincing my parents that it was a viable career path was completely terrifying. It wasn’t until we linked up with our managers that we started to really believe that a career in music was a real possibility. Our work habits (and work ethic) really started to shift when we started to look at it as our future careers: what started as a hobby eventually morphed into a “craft” that we were actively trying to improve every day.

PW:

How did you two meet and come up with the name Louis Vivet?

We actually first met in school at USC about 5 years ago when we were both working individually on different music projects. Our connection was instant, but this project didn’t really take hold until recently. As we were trying to characterize this act with a name, we actually just stumbled upon the story of Louis Vivet and knew that it was perfect. Louis Vivet is the name of the first patient medically diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder in 19th century France. There was so much about the story that resonated with us and it was filled with symbols and allegories that matched our personalities and humanity, that it just took hold and became our name.

PW: You

just released a new original song, “Downbeat”, should we expect more originals from you or more covers like “Save Tonight”?

Right now we’re very focused on our original tracks but some other covers or remixes aren’t out of the question. We’re going to be releasing a lot of music and working with some amazing collaborators during 2015, so you never really know what is in the cards. We’re currently putting the final touches on a new remix. The original tune features one of the most talented vocalists we’ve had the pleasure of working with. Stay tuned!

PW: Do you draw inspiration from any fellow DJs out there or any musicians? Or are you just trying to do your own thing?

Of course there are some amazingly talented DJs and musicians that inspire us every day. Our musical tastes are super diverse and we never know exactly what will stimulate us each day. Sometimes it’s Christian Karlsson or Dillon Francis, other days it’s Gareth Emery or Eric Prydz; even Taylor Swift and traditional singer/songwriters can influence us. We also draw vast inspiration from other artistic creations such as visual arts and literature, but ultimately this act is really a manifestation of who we are as people. Our brains and dispositions really form a balance and we think it’s very important we traverse our own unique path.

PW:

Can

you walk us through the steps of how you come up with your original material?

It’s a very collaborative process. We have a great workflow and know each other really well, which definitely helps a lot. We like to test a lot of ideas and then see what works and what doesn’t, and kind of just see where the producing session takes us. And when we work with another collaborator, like a vocalist or songwriter, it adds a completely new dimension to the session. We really enjoy collaborating with others; the perspectives they bring can completely change the direction of a project, because when it’s just the two of us, we can often get stuck headed in a singular direction. But most of it comes down to channeling the emotions that we’re feeling at a particular time…our art is an expression of ourselves, and we want to always keep it completely genuine.

PW: What are your goals for 2015?

This year is very much about creating exceptional music for us. There aren’t and clear goals per se; rather we just want to grow as musicians and share what we have created with the world.

PW: How do you want to be remembered?

Timeless art. Music is just a sliver of our creativity and we want to expand the realm of how people experience music as an art form. If we could be remembered for immersing people in an atmosphere of our creativity we would probably sleep very well.

PW: Are you DJing anywhere soon? Where can people find out what’s going on with you?

We have a distinct vision for our live show concept that requires a very measured approach to construct and execute. If you’re lucky, you may find us playing a DJ set in a dark room somewhere, but we’re waiting to debut the full live show until it’s absolutely perfect. So, for now, no shows immediately on the horizon….but if you follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and SoundCloud we’ll be sure to keep all of you updated!
