Luke Wade Talks The River, Tour & Life After The Voice

Catch up with Luke Wade since he left The Voice, and mark your calendars for his tour coming to your city!

Born into a creative family, music inevitably seemed like Luke Wade’s destiny. He began playing the guitar when he was just a junior in high school. The first entire song he ever learned to play was ‘Inside out’ by Eve 6 (90’s fans rejoice!). Growing up in Dublin, Texas, writing became “a way for him to express himself and music was the most organic way to do just that.” From there, his musical journey progressed over the years. He fronted his own band called Luke Wade & No Civilians, and had two independent album releases under his belt.

In comes Season 7 of NBC’s hit singing show The Voice. Luke had previously watched Season 6 because his friends, Dawn and Hawkes, had auditioned and made it all the way to the Battle Rounds. He received an email back in October of 2013 to come and try out for the show. He sang ‘That’s How Strong My Love Is’ for his blind audition and got all FOUR superstar coaches (Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Pharrell Williams, and Gwen Stefani) to turn their chairs for him. Luke decided to pick Pharrell as his coach, an experience that he said was like “being in a kung fu movie where Pharrell was the master.” He was humbled by his time with Pharrell, and wanted to soak up all the knowledge that was given. Luke ended up making it to the Top 8 of the competition, where he says he forged lasting friendships with the rest of the contestants from his season.

After his time on The Voice, Luke quickly gained momentum by taking himself and No Civilians on the road. The second leg of his tour starts on April 6th, beginning with St. Louis, Missouri. So what can one expect from a Luke Wade show? “What I try to do is bring everyone closer and connect everybody”, he says. “Lots of energy and emotion, songs from the show (The Voice) and songs off the past two records. If there’s two feet between everybody in the crowd when we start, my goal is there to be six inches between everybody by the time that I’m done.”

To get fans excited and create extra buzz for the tour, Luke recently took to Twitter and other social media outlets for ’12 Days of Luke Wade’, where every day he posted an intimate acoustic performance of songs off of his album The River. He wanted to “acquaint people with the material and properly promote it” since the album had been released just before his time on The Voice.

I asked Luke to describe the sound of his record to those who might not be too familiar. “It’s a collection of songs ranging from folk, to soul, and rock,” he says. “It’s about that transition from being an adult to realizing that it takes a lot of work to be a better adult.” From the beautiful ‘Til The Fighting Is Through’ (one of the songs he says he is most proud of), to the symphonic ‘Dr. Please’, The River touches lives because of the lyrics, voice, and arrangements that Luke Wade provides so effortlessly. It ranks up there as one of my all-time favorite albums. It’s an album you can listen to on the long drive or commute to work, an album that makes you stop and think, an album you can sing along to, an album that you can share with your closest family and friends. Make sure you pick up your copy of The River today!
