If you were watching the Emmys this past Sunday, you may have noticed presenter and nominee Jon Hamm’s voice was particularly raspy, and now we know why.
The 42-year-old Mad Men actor is having surgery to remove a throat polyp. “He’s having a single polyp removed from his throat,” his rep, Erica Grey, confirmed to the Daily News. She assures that this will be a “routine outpatient procedure.” The surgery will take place in Boston, according to Life & Style magazine.
Hamm’s Mad Men co-star January Jones was overheard discussing his surgery at a party after this past Sunday’s 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, which Jon left empty-handed. Despite his raspier voice, he took to the stage with Alec Baldwin to present Julia Louis-Dreyfus with the award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series.
People who use their voices and speak a great amount, including actors and singers, are prone to polyp’s and other throat growths. Other performers, such as Adele, Mariah Carey, and John Mayer, have had throat surgeries for similar growths in their throats. Adele’s surgery, which made headlines a couple of years ago, was also performed in Boston.
Jon Hamm wasn’t the only one from Mad Men going home empty-handed at the Emmys. Despite its 12 nominations, the show didn’t win a single category.
