The remake of the 1960 western film The Magnificent Seven has been rewritten. Saving Mr Banks director John Lee Hancock is now in charge of the script, while Tom Cruise is no longer part of the project, according to The Wrap. Cruise was linked to the film in May 2012. Hancock is no stranger to the western genre as he directed and co-wrote Disney's The Alamo in 2004. Nic Pizzolatto [True Detective] wrote the first draft for the remake. The Magnificent Seven original film starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter and Horst Buchholz. It tells the story of a group of American gunmen hired to protect a small Mexican village from a group of bandits. It was remade as a CBS series from 1998 to 2000. Matt Damon, Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman are rumoured to be part of the film, but nothing has been confirmed yet. No director has been selected either, although it's possible that Hancock could take the lead. Hancock's latest film Saving Mr Banks is already gaining awards buzz while Maleficent, which he assisted with re-shoots, is scheduled for release on May 30th, 2014.
