At long last, fans of the Satsuki Yoshino’s Barakamon series can heave a sigh of relief! The prequel/spin-off to the hit manga series Barakamon, titled Handa-kun, will finally be receiving an anime adaptation.
With Barakamon being a joy to both read and watch, the announcement of Handa-kun’s anime adaptation is nothing short of good news, especially since the manga is just as much of a gem as its parent series.
Handa-kun has been licensed and released both digitally and in print by Yen Press; Yen Press describes the plot of the manga’s first volume as the following:
“Handsome teenage calligrapher Sei Handa is worshipped by all his classmates as an aloof superstar--too bad Sei's inherent negativity makes him believe that everyone actually hates him...?! A youthful comedy of misunderstanding and melancholy unfolds in the first volume of this hilarious prequel to Barakamon!”
Barakamon, whose 9th volume will be released in February, premiered in July of 2014 and had a total of 12 episodes – the anime was streamed by both Crunchyroll and Funimation, with Funimation owning the home video release rights to the exceptional series.
The synopsis for Barakamon, provided by Funimation, is the following:
“An aspiring artist’s world is about to be turned upside down.
Seishu exiles himself to a small island to rediscover his passion as a calligrapher after violently attacking one of his most vocal critics. While the Goto Islands appear to be a tranquil paradise on the surface, this young mapmaker soon learns that wacky neighbors and hyperactive children just might provide him the sense of humor he needs on his journey towards self-discovery.
Based on the popular manga series comes a tale of finding inspiration in the most hilarious and unlikely of places.”
While Handa-kun won’t have any of the cute little troublemakers and residents from Goto Islands present in its storyline, it will introduce a new batch of lovable characters while keeping the main character the same. Part of what made Barakamon so endearing was taking this journey along with Seishu Handa and seeing the world presented in Barakamon through his eyes.
I’m more than ready to take this journey with Handa-kun once more – this time to his past.
