Fairy tale fans have plenty of films to look forward to: Beauty and the Beast just came out, there’s an Aladdin movie in the works, and now the tale of Robin Hood is returning to the big screen, but with a big twist—he’s not the main character.
Margot Robbie of Suicide Squad fame is taking on the role of Maid Marian in Marian, a film that turns Robin Hood’s love interest into an actual fighter, and kills off Robin Hood himself!
“After a conspiracy to conquer England in which the love of her life Robin Hood dies before her eyes, Marian picks up the cause to lead her people into a pivotal war,” reads the official plot summary. “She comes to power, charging into a battle that will not only decide the fate of the kingdom, but that will see her don the mantle of the man she loved. In the process, she rises as a legend herself.”
While there is currently no director or release date for this movie just yet, there is no doubt that getting rid of the story’s traditional protagonist in favor of a female heroine who kicks butt is a fun move. It's guaranteed to produce an original story with which we are completely unfamiliar.
This is not the only Robin Hood-based adaption in the works. In addition to Marian, keep an eye out for the more conventional Robin Hood movie to hit theaters in March 2018. That adaptation will star Taren Egerton (Kingsman) and Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One).
