Singer song-writer MarieLine, who hails from France, is a woman of many talents. Not only is she musically gifted, she’s also a model and actress and combines her passions for various art forms into her every day life.
Nowhere is such more apparent than the video for her new single “I Don’t Have Time For This Shit!” which PopWrapped are delighted to premiere.
Asked about the song and how it came together, MarieLine says:
I was sitting with my singing coach, Franni Burke, before starting a lesson. She’s become a friend in time, and I guess I was complaining about something — being the good Frenchwoman that I am — and I remember at the end of my rant I said “And, you know, I don’t have time for this shit!” We both started laughing, and it just hit me. I looked at her, and I said “that would be a great song actually, I don’t have time for this shit!”
So I started thinking about what is beyond annoying in every day life and put down these ideas on paper — I have five in the song but many more on paper — and then created the music and recorded my voice on my home computer. I had the entire song in my head.
You can actually hear that the vocals are scratch vocals from my bedroom. Once I sent the track to real producers and re-recorded the vocals, they decided the initial ones were much better, just really laid back and in tune with the idea behind the song, so we kept them!
As for the video to the track, she explains:
I had NO IDEA where to find a director. My babysitter at the time mentioned that she studied managing or something that had to do with PR and Social Media, so I asked her if she knew of directors. She sent me three links, including the one from Ibra Ake. His short films blew me away; I was sold on his talent. I hired him, and he asked his friends to be part of the shoot. For example, the girl at the pharmacy is a friend of his — she’s SO good! — and the guy at the bar is her boyfriend. Ibra and I wrote the synopsis and we shot it all in one day! It was loads of fun, and I am so proud of the result.
The video, itself, represents the many stresses and strains we go through in everyday life, many of which we can most certainly do without. Lyrically, the song is simplistic, but that’s what gives it its power — it’s honest and real, and that’s the whole point MarieLine wants to get across and does so with gusto.
The song also gives fans a taste of what to expect when she releases her hotly anticipated electro-pop album later this summer.
