Let’s be clear before my fellow Jason Bourne junkies get really excited over this:
It’s all speculation until Universal, Matt Damon, and/or Paul Greengrass say otherwise.
According to sources who have passed on some secrets to Deadline, Universal Pictures is preparing the paperwork with Damon and director Greengrass to get the ball rolling on another Jason Bourne film.
YES, FINA–I mean…this is all still rumor, of course.
Bourne’s storyline presumably ended with the franchise’s third film, The Bourne Ultimatum. Jeremy Renner stepped in for a spinoff in The Bourne Legacy, starring as Aaron Cross, who was essentially in a similar predicament to Bourne’s.
As much as I loved Legacy and I think Renner did a great job of filling some pretty big shoes–there’s just nothing like the original!
Neither Universal nor reps would comment on the situation (which leads me to believe that it’s a distinct possibility!).
If this does happen, supposedly the newest Bourne film would push sequel plans for The Bourne Legacy back and take over the theater date, currently set for July 16, 2016. Right now, there are confirmed plans for Renner to return with director Justin Lin, of The Fast and the Furious fame, helming the sequel.
The Bourne films are based on a series of novels by Robert Ludlum, with more recent books being continued by Eric van Lustbader since Ludlum’s death.
