Last night Doctor Who fans said goodbye to a dear friend, Eleven (Matt Smith). I still get a bit choked up thinking of Amelia Pond telling her Raggedy Man goodnight. Although it was a tearful greeting, we were met with Eleven’s successor Twelve.

As Matt Smith gracefully exited, Peter Capaldi came barreling in screaming about the color of his kidneys.

The cast took to Twitter to thank fans and make way for series eight of the show.

Showrunner Steven Moffat was the first to sing Smith’s Praises. He wrote, “Farewell to Matt Smith, citizen of the universe and a gentleman to boot. He’ll be standing ready, should the cosmos ever need him again!”

Smith also reflected as his time as the Doctor saying, “To the Whoniverse, thanks a million. You’re the best. I’ll miss you. And I’ll miss the madness.”

As sad as he is to be leaving the iconic role, Smith has no doubt that Capaldi will shine as the newest regeneration of the Doctor.

He said: “I don’t think anything can prepare you for the experience of what being the Doctor in Doctor Who is but I think he’s as ready as he can be.”

Matt left him with a few words of advice:  “I’ve just said ‘Have a good time, mate’. He’ll be great. Peter will hit the ground running and keep flying.”

Series eight won’t air until the Autumn 2014 and there are already so many questions to be answered. The Time Lords have awarded the Doctor with an extra regeneration, but has this started a new cycle? Why does Twelve have no idea how to fly the TARDIS? Hopefully Moffat can clear all this up while keeping true to the Doctor Who canon.
