Star Wars fans, behold! If you’ve always dreamed of becoming a Jedi Knight and fighting off your enemies with a real lightsaber, here is an exciting piece of news for you. Scientists from Harvard and MIT have actually invented a new form of matter that replicates the famous Star Wars lightsaber, and entirely from accident too. Harvard university physics professor, Professor Lukin, explains the science behind their invention: "Most of the properties of light we know about originate from the fact that photons are massless and do not interact. What we have done is create a special type of medium in which photons interact with each other so strongly that they act as though they have mass, and bind together to form molecules.” In other words, the Harvard and MIT scientists have created this particular kind of matter so that these photons deflect each other. Similarly, it’s the same effect that’s seen in the Star Wars movies. So a real life lightsaber has been created, but it does lack the traditional THHHWWOMM sound (as described by The Guardian). Also, if you’re thinking that you’ll be getting the actual weapon for Christmas, think again. These scientists have mentioned that their lightsaber replica invention was purely accidental and just for fun. In fact, the science behind their work was for the sake of building a quantum supercomputer. All that being said though, it doesn’t hurt to cross our fingers and pray for the real thing to hit the shelves someday. And if you haven’t heard already, Star Wars: Episode VII will be hitting the theatres in 2015. It would be really cool if Disney could get their hands on real life lightsabers for the production of the film, huh?
