Brittany Maynard, the 29-year-old woman with a terminal malignant brain tumor
made headlines last month when she announced publicly on her blog that she was making the decision to end her own life. Maynard planned to end her life with medicine prescribed by her doctor. She would have her husband and family by her side, as Oregon (the state that she resides in), is one of the few that upholds the Death and Dignity Act.
Maynard explained that her chosen date would be November 1st. However, she has since changed her mind. She said in a CNN video
on Wednesday that, “I still feel good enough and I still have enough joy and I still laugh and smile with my family and friends enough that it doesn’t seem like the right time right now. But it will come, because I feel myself getting sicker. It’s happening each week.”
She is making the best of her situation, having just returned from a trip to the Grand Canyon with her family. She was diagnosed last April and was given 6 months to live.
In the video, Maynard goes on to discuss her fear of waiting too long to take her life.
"The worst thing that could happen to me is that I wait too long because I'm trying to seize each day," she says, "but I somehow have my autonomy taken away from me by my disease because of the nature of my cancer."
