After months of wondering who would play the coveted roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in the upcoming film adaptation of 50 Shades of Grey, we finally learned that Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson have been cast respectively.
According to Digital Spy following this announcement, Melanie Griffith, Johnson’s mother, has announced her excitement in her daughter’s casting.
She took to Twitter and said: “My beautiful child Dakota has been chosen to play Anna Steele in 50 Shades!!! Look out world! Here she comes!!! #proudmama.”
While the Working Girl actress is excited for Johnson’s casting, fans are not so happy. They have taken to the internet with a petition on Change.org that has already claimed over 7,000 signatures.
Fans reasons for the casting change are that the leads ‘aren’t hot enough.’
They were hoping to see an actor like Matt Bomer or Ian Somerhalder to take on the leading male role. Alexis Bledel was a fan favourite for Ana Steele.
Producer, Dana Brunetti, responded: “There is a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks. Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc.”
The film is scheduled for release next summer.
