: Why did you decide to do “Promises” for your music video?

Ménage:

“Promises” was one of the first songs we ever wrote together a long time ago. We had recorded a heavier version of the song a while back but constantly toyed with the idea of playing it in a more ambient way.. eventually we became obsessed with this “new way” of playing Promises, and felt the need to capture it in a recording.

Recording it live off the floor was an idea and challenge we came up with. It was fun and quick. Completely different than any Menage video of the past.. we were excited to share it with the world.

Are you going to do more?

M:

We actually recorded one more song off this EP, in the same manner… We won’t reveal which track it was, just yet..we will release it in time. Along with videos for each of the other songs off the EP. We love taking each song to the next level, with a visual. That’s why we love to make videos.

PW

: This EP is very focused on the now. Was there an event that happened causing you to think about this so deeply?

M

: Life on the road. Experiences in day to day life; in this crazy life we have created for ourselves. There really is nothing like being in a band. Especially when you are in a band with your two siblings.

M

: They are like chapters in a book. The book can’t be written and revealed all at once because our experiences as a band are changing so quickly with each release of a song. We want each EP to be symbolic of what we are living through, in the most “real time” as possible.

PW

: You have family in Portugal and Canada. How many languages do you speak?

M

: The three of us siblings speak English and Portuguese fluently. Because the whole band studied in Canada, where it is mandatory to study French for numerous years in school, we all speak some French as well. Living in LA for many years gave us a fair amount of exposure to the Spanish language as well.

PW

: Bela plays a few different instruments in the “Promises” video. How many instruments can you all play?

M: Each of us studied our primary instruments classically for many, many years.. We like to swap instruments constantly though, and continue to learn each day. When you touch a new instrument for the first time, it inspires you in a way that the instrument you have been studying for years, could never. We use that unfamiliarity as a way to inspire new sounds which lead to new songs.

: You recently donated to the ALS Society of Canada- thank you! Are you going to do the ice bucket challenge along with your donation?

M

: We decided to donate instead of doing the ice bucket challenge. We wanted to just cut to the chase and get the money we were able to pool, to where it was needed, as soon as possible.

PW

: When did you realize you wanted to do music as a career?

M

: I don’t believe any of us in Menage have ever had another career goal invade our minds, at any time. I think as soon as we understood what the word “career” meant, we knew we were choosing to have a career making music.

: What goals do you have for your musical career?

M

: We want to make music as long as we possibly can. There really is nothing else that we feel we would be happy doing. If the world keeps listening to the songs we write, that’s just icing on the cake.

PW

: Are there specific places you want to tour, people you want to collaborate, or magazines you want to star in?

M:

We talk about invading Brasil.. It just seems like the fans there are so loyal and expressive, it would blow our minds to be on a big stage having a blast with them.

But then we dream about playing in the UK because so many of our favorite bands are from the UK.

Appearing in Rolling Stone magazine seems like this timeless goal..so yes, I think that would mean a lot.

If a new fan is starting to listen to you, which songs do you recommend as an accurate introduction?

M

: We have a track on this EP called, “To The End” which I think is a good representation of our hunger and need to continue to do what we do. Plus it is a recorded insight of what a Menage live show is like – full of uncontrolled, passionate and chaotic energy, and a chorus that includes every audience member’s vocal participation.

If a new fan is curious to know where Menage first came to be and the experiences that shaped us as a band, they should have a listen to our first-ever single, “Bury Us Young”. The song was written in and about our old LA neighbourhood, Echo Park. It only seemed right to record the music video there, too.
