For the first time since 1986, Meryl Streep and her daughter Mamie Gummer will share the screen in the upcoming rock comedy Ricki and the Flash. They first performed together in Heartburn, when Gummer was only 2 years old, and since then she has found her own success in shows such as HBO’s John Adams and films such as The Hoax.
Streep is playing Ricki, the mother who lost sight of her family by pursuing her dreams of becoming a star, and Gummer is set to play Ricki’s daughter, Julie.
Kevin Kline, who starred in the 1982 movie Sophie’s Choice with Streep, is said to be plaing Ricki’s ex-husband Pete, who asks her to come to Chicago to help the struggling Julie after a difficult divorce.
Diablo Cody, who wrote the Oscar-winning script for Juno, is writing the script, with Jonathan Demme, The Silence of the Lambs, directing. The film will be in theatres in just over a year, with the release date currently set at June 26th 2015.
But this is not the only musical-style production Streep is lined up for; she is also playing Maria Callas in the HBO production of Master Class, a new version of the Terrence Mcnally’s Broadway play. It is expected to start filming in January, once the production of Ricki and the Flash is finished.
