For a younger generation, some only know Michael Bolton from the SNL Digital Short he was featured in along with Lonely Island. The song they did was entitled "Captain Jack Sparrow," and it was a hilarious combination of serious rap mixed with an insane movie hook, and it was an instant classic. But Michael Bolton did not make it big with his Lonely Island collaboration. In fact, he was a huge sex symbol back in the day with his long blonde locks and sexy big voice. These two factors are the basis for the basis for Michael Bolton's Big Sexy Valentine's Special, which, of course, has some familiar faces.
This Netflix special dropped the day before Valentine's Day, and it begins with Michael Bolton singing/explaining what Valentine's Day means to him -- and it means that there are only 10 months until Christmas. Cue Santa Claus. Santa appears at the end of Bolton's giant opening musical number to let him know that he's made too many toys, and, if the world does not conceive more babies, Christmas will be ruined. Bolton offers to release a sexy single in an attempt to make more babies but Santa doesn't think that will be enough, so, instead, they launch a telethon-style production to save Christmas. They receive calls after everyone has sex and the board counts each one as a baby conceived. The premise is insane, but the execution is gold.
This special is hilarious and so well done. Michael Bolton makes fun of himself and his sex symbol status as he shows us his 'love nest' where much of the special takes place, and, between each scene, he is seen belting notes in all sorts of romance novel cover-like locations. Bolton hits a lot of speed bumps along the way, as he attempts to help the world make babies, even going into full Boltron status (we'll let you see what this means...), but it is well worth watching. Michael Bolton could be on his way to becoming a comedy icon with this release along with his work on SNL, which he should do more of.
