In 2014 and the following years we may be seeing some classic Miramax films make a return with sequels and/or television adaptations. Earlier today, we brought you a story of the possibility of a Shakespeare in Love sequel.
What other projects can we expect and how did this even come about?
A pact was made between The Weinstein Company and Miramax to produce movie and television shows from Miramax’s library. According to TheWrap, the two companies plan “to produce one or two movies and television shows a year…and a stage production roughly every 18 months.”
This pact is set to go into development next year.
The Weinstein brothers founded the Miramax in 1979 helping to create some classic films and kick-start many careers. In 2005, they left the company and founded TWC. When Miramax was put up for sale in 2010, their intention to purchase the studio was squashed when Colony Capital and Qatar Holding made a bigger offer. Now the studio is back in their lives and both parties seem to be excited for the upcoming projects.
“Reuniting Harvey and Bob with the acres of cinematic diamonds that is the Miramax library, and combining the two companies’ powerful distribution capabilities, will create an unparalleled partnership in cinematic excellence,” said Colony Capital principal Tom Barrack Jr. For the Weinstein Brothers, “to have the Miramax banner fly once again is a dream come true for all of us.”
Harvey Weinstein even compared the pact to the Raiders of the Lost Ark. “It’s like we’re opening the warehouse at the end of the film and [Colony Capital founder Tom Barrack] has given us the keys to all these treasures.”
Now Shakespeare In Love isn’t the only sequel the Weinsteins have in mind. They would also love to do a sequel of the 1996 film Swingers and the 1998 film Rounders starring Matt Damon and Edward Norton. We might also see Good Will Hunting and Flirting with Disaster adapted into television shows.
But before moving forward with any new sequels, TV shows or stage productions, they want to make sure the creative teams behind the iconic collection of Miramax films are 100% behind the future projects. “If we’re going to do ‘Good Will Hunting,’ assume [writers and stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck] will be involved, or we’re not,” Harvey Weinstein stressed.
